Build Your Walking Toolkit
As you begin walking, you’ll discover things that make your walks easier, more enjoyable, and more comfortable.
The goal isn’t to collect a bunch of gear.
The goal is to discover what supports your success.
Over time, you’ll begin building your own walking toolkit.
Some walkers enjoy listening to music.
Some prefer walking in silence.
Some carry water.
Some use a smartwatch.
Some bring a backpack.
There is no perfect toolkit.
There is only the toolkit that works for you.
Awareness
One of the most valuable skills you can develop as a walker is Awareness.
As you walk, begin paying attention to what helps you enjoy the experience and what makes it easier to stay consistent. You may discover that a hat helps on sunny days. You may find that carrying water makes longer walks more comfortable. You may enjoy listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks. You may decide that sunglasses, earbuds, or a small backpack would be helpful.
Pay attention.
Your experience will teach you what you need.
The more aware you become, the more personalized your toolkit becomes.
Finding Your Places
As you continue walking, you’ll begin discovering places you enjoy returning to.
Some people enjoy neighborhood sidewalks.
Some enjoy local parks.
Some enjoy walking trails.
Some prefer indoor tracks or treadmills.
The best walking location is the one you’ll return to again and again.
Explore different environments and pay attention to how each one makes you feel.
Sometimes finding a place you enjoy is the difference between forcing yourself to walk and looking forward to it.
Tools to Track Your Progress
Sometimes progress happens so gradually that it’s easy to miss. Tracking provides a way to look back and see how far you’ve come.
It can help answer questions such as:
• Am I walking consistently?
• Am I making progress?
• Am I becoming more active?
• Does this challenge matter?
When your mind tells you nothing is changing, your tracker can remind you of the progress you’ve already made.
Calendars & Trackers
Some people prefer using a printable tracker or calendar.
A calendar provides a visual reminder of both your progress and your commitment.
When you’re building a new habit, it can be helpful to have a visual cue that reminds you of the choices you’ve made for yourself and the goals you’re working toward.
Sometimes seeing those walking days marked on a calendar is enough motivation to keep going.
Walking Apps & Smartwatches
I personally use both my phone and smartwatch when I walk.
My phone tends to be more accurate for tracking distance, while my smartwatch provides additional information such as heart rate and other activity data. Both are excellent options, and you don’t need to use both if you don’t want to.
The biggest advantage of using a walking app or smartwatch is simplicity. You don’t have to remember what you did or write everything down afterward. Simply start your walk, end your walk, and let the technology do the tracking for you.
Many apps can also provide helpful information such as:
✓ Distance
✓ Duration
✓ Walking pace
✓ Average speed
✓ Elevation changes
✓ Heart rate data
You can track your walks using:
✓ Printable tracker
✓ Calendar
✓ Samsung Health
✓ Apple Health
✓ MapMyWalk
✓ Smartwatch
The method doesn’t matter. Consistency does.
Add Only What You Need
Many people believe they need special gear before they begin.
Most people don’t. If you have a comfortable pair of shoes, any type of workout clothes, this is all you need to begin.
Start simple.
As you gain experience, you may discover things that improve your comfort or solve a problem.
Examples include:
✓ Walking shoes
✓ Insoles
✓ Hiker Socks
✓ Weather-appropriate clothing
✓ Smartwatch
✓ Backpack
✓ Hydration pack
Add tools because they help you. Not because someone says you need them.
Build your toolkit one piece at a time. Let your walking toolkit grow with you.
Allow your walking journey to teach you what works best for you.
Every walk teaches you something. Every challenge completed builds confidence. Every step forward becomes part of your story.
When you’re ready, continue to the next stage of your journey.
