FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting a walking journey can bring up a lot of questions. Here are answers to some of the most common questions I hear from people who are beginning or returning to a walking routine.

Getting Started

Do I need special equipment to start walking?

No. Most people can begin with a comfortable pair of walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. As you become more active, you may choose to add items such as a fitness tracker, hydration pack, or walking poles, but none of these are required to get started.

What if I haven’t exercised in years?

That’s okay. The Step-Up Challenge was specifically designed for beginners and people returning to activity after a long break. Start where you are and focus on consistency rather than speed or distance.

How fast do I need to walk?

There is no required pace. A comfortable walking speed that allows you to move consistently is a great place to begin. As your fitness improves, your pace may naturally increase.

What if I miss a day?

Life happens. Missing a day does not mean you’ve failed. Simply return to your next scheduled walk and continue moving forward. Progress is built through consistency over time, not perfection.

The Step-Up Challenge

What is the goal of the Step-Up Challenge?

The goal is to help you establish a consistent walking habit by completing 21 active walking days within one month.

Why 21 active days?

The challenge is designed to encourage regular movement while still allowing flexibility for work, family responsibilities, weather, and recovery days.

Do I have to complete the challenge in exactly 21 days?

No. The goal is to complete 21 active walking days within one month. This allows room for real life while still building consistency.

What if I need to start with less than 15 minutes?

That’s perfectly fine. If 15 minutes feels overwhelming, begin with 5 or 10 minutes and gradually increase as your confidence and fitness improve.

Walking Tools & Tracking

Do I need a smartwatch?

No. A smartwatch can provide additional information such as heart rate, pace, and distance, but it is not required.

Can I use my phone instead?

Absolutely. Many free walking apps work well on a smartphone and can track your walks without requiring a smartwatch.

Should I use a paper calendar or a tracking app?

Both can be helpful. A calendar provides a visual reminder of your commitment and progress, while an app can automatically track details such as distance, pace, and duration.

Weather & Safety

What if the weather is bad?

Consider indoor alternatives such as:

  • Walking at a mall
  • Using a treadmill
  • Walking at a recreation center
  • Walking laps inside your home

Consistency matters more than location.

Is it safe to walk alone?

Many people safely walk alone every day. Choose well-traveled areas, let someone know your plans, remain aware of your surroundings, and follow local safety recommendations.

Working With Kimberlee

What is a Walking Wellness Consultation?

A Walking Wellness Consultation is a one-on-one conversation where we discuss your goals, current activity level, challenges, and possible next steps for building a walking routine that fits your lifestyle.

Do I need to be fit before working with you?

No. The purpose of working together is to help you get started or regain consistency, regardless of your current fitness level.

Do you train runners?

My primary focus is helping people develop sustainable walking habits and build confidence through movement. While walking can support many fitness goals, my approach is centered on walking wellness rather than competitive athletic training.

Can walking really make a difference?

Yes. Walking can improve cardiovascular health, mood, stress management, energy levels, mobility, and overall well-being. Small consistent steps often lead to meaningful long-term results.
